Focus on your Art!

Your big day has arrived and now you need to get some paint down onto your canvas. Do you take it from memory, or your sketch or a recent photograph. It all depends on you. Take it one step at a time. Don’t ask others for advice. You already know what to do. Don’t you?

  • Doodle all over some scrap paper (standing or sitting). Just warm up your finger and arms.

  • Use different pens, mark making tools, paints, markers, oil sticks, chalk, charcoal.

  • Then seal your above marks with some medium ( fixative, or gel medium etc.)

  • Let it dry

  • Gather different sizes of brushes and various tools.

  • Prepare your canvas or buy them already gesso-ed.

  • Get that spray bottle handy to rewet your canvas.

  • Protect your skin (gloves, or lotion).

  • I turn on two fans for air circulation and my music. Plus the AC is going.

  • Mix up your palette colors ( blues, pinks, warm colors, cool colors etc.)

  • Start with your doodles all over the canvas. Use your entire arm. Big movements.

  • Use yor non dominant hand to start - get after it. Then switch to your other hand.

  • Switch brushes and use another or a palette knife or a whisk brush. Check the dollar store.

  • Step back from the canvas during the process and admire, fix or change.

  • You will add paint, substract, scratch paint, draw into the paint, write numbers, etc.

  • Do you have large area, smooth areas, rough areas, small marks, large open marks.

  • Are all your strokes vertical then add some horizontal lines.

  • Have you adjusted where your focal point will be? Look for it. Change it if necessary.

  • Have you made sure that your don’t have something similar in shape or colors and designs right next to each other? Mix it up. Your eyes love that. They think similar is boring.

  • As your focus wanes consider stopping. Or get a drink of water or snack and proceed.

  • Let your artwork sit for awhile. I usually will add a glaze about now. Then seal another area.

  • What does it remind you of? Write down a name or title for your piece. How does it make you feel? Good or terrible? Make a mental note of where you will make changes.

  • Call it a day! Start tomorrow with fresh eyes and energy.

Enjoy the process. Time is a ticking. Just get after it.
