Did you know it’s not only the paint color on the canvas , it’s all the shapes within the painting that makes for interest. Those lines, circles, c- shapes , curves, soft and hard edges, fading backgrounds or bold backgrounds. Or the light that hits a portrait at a certain time of day.
Our mind can associate different shapes and color through the cones of our eyes. Which results in different outcomes or emotions when we see a painting. Some paintings are pleasing to the eyes and others are more intense. Some are sultry and some are calming. Some paintings remind us of something familiar and we like it right away. Memories may be embedded into colors.
We all see art differently. Just like we all look different. The psychology of color in paintings plays a crucial role in shaping the viewer's emotional and cognitive experience. Colors can evoke specific moods and feelings—blues often create a sense of calm and serenity, while reds can stimulate excitement or intensity or urgency (fire trucks) . Green represents growth, harmony, renewal and nature. Yellow is associated with happiness, optimism and creativity. ( I never forgot the yellow kitchen at Monet’s house when I first saw it). Purple denotes luxury, mystery and spirituality. White paint reflects open spaces, calmness, purity, simplicity and peace. Round shapes are associated with friendliness and harmony. While sharp angular shapes are a sign of bravery, boldness, modernity.
Artists use color intentionally to communicate themes, evoke memories, or influence perception. However, I feel very free when I select my palette for a painting. At times the shapes that appear were not intentional at all. It was just what I chose to lay down on the canvas. Having the freedom of movement with my brushes. It was just “ A moment in time” (c)artbytsh. Understanding the psychological impact of color allows painters to craft works of art that resonate more deeply, guiding the observer’s reaction and engagement with the art.
All major companies use shapes in their logos and specific colors to catch our eye. Our brain does look for shortcuts so if it looks familiar we will “ get it” and perhaps trust it instantly. Colors carry distinct meanings that influence emotions and perceptions. Understanding these associations helps in creating art that resonates on deeper levels.
Get After it. Life is long but really short. As it speeds right by us every single day. If we are so lucky!
